The institute conducts preclinical and clinical research in the areas of neuroscience, rehabilitation, pharmacology, neurophysiology, endocrine physiology and circulation physiology. Scientific activities include molecular and cell biological studies, integrative experimental studies, clinical research and epidemiology. Among the conditions given special interest are psychiatric and neurological endemic diseases, dementia, neuropsychiatric disabilities, eye diseases and common metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.
The institute is responsible for the occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language pathology, audiology and pharmacist programmes, and also has major commitments in the education of future physicians, dentists, prescriptionists and biomedical analysts. The institute also provides postgraduate education, contract education and independent courses.
